Wee calf

About Us

Warren and Carole Millar started Skean Dhu Belted Galloways in August 2004 with the purchase of an in-calf cow followed a few months later with another in-calf cow with heifer calf at foot.  Over the next 18 months the herd grew with the addition of 4 weaned heifers that were quickly followed with 4 in-calf cows.  Today we run 22 breeding females.  These are run alongside our Limousin Stud and commercial beef.

Carole came from a horse background and spent many years working in Europe as a Stud groom.  Horses were non-negotiable on the farm so it was a case of 'if you can't beat them, join them' and coming from Scotland it had to be a Scottish breed.  After seeing 'Belties' on a trip back to the UK the decision was made.
In 2006 we started showing the Belties with success and in 2008 won Supreme Champion Galloway at The Royal Show in Christchurch with a yearling heifer.

In 2008 we purchased our first Galloway in-calf cow and Fordel Galloways was formed.  In 2009 numbers grew when we purchased a further 6 in-calf cows, a weaned heifer and weaned bull.  There are very few Galloways left in New Zealand and we decided to search for some females to keep their presence here.  It would be a great shame to see these original Galloways disappear.

With the use of imported genetics through AI we are continually improving and to date have used Clanfingon Limelight, Ashleigh's Signature, Peppercorn Zula and more recently Southfield Double-O-Seven from the UK over our Beltie females.

Our aim is to breed traditional, quality cattle and improve the breed with overseas genetics concentrating on the true characteristics of the breed and not the aesthetics of the’belt’.  There is no such thing as a perfect belt!

We will continue to promote the Galloway breed by showing at A & P Shows, attending Field Days, beef competitions and at every opportunity let people know about this breed.
